RuneScape fans rejoice! Two tabletop games are heading our way in 2022 in a collaboration between Jagex and Steamforged Games! Thanks to their partnership, expect to see a new RuneScape board game and a RuneScape Tabletop Roleplaying Game (TTRPG) this year. The board game will be a part of a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter, while the RuneScape core rulebook will be a release straight to retail.
Steamforged Games is no stranger to converting well-known and loved video game licenses to the tabletop scene. What started with the Dark Souls Board Game has expanded to include titles like the Monster Hunter World board game and the Horizon Zero Dawn board game, which we’ve previously covered at Nerds on Earth.
Jagex is the home of RuneScape, a free MMORPG in the fantasy world of Gielinor. There is actually RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, the latter which is more akin to the original release of the game. RuneScape reminds me a lot of Tibia in the sense that they’re both free and tap into that nostalgia of a long-running fantasy game community.
In both games, you can expect to find nods and references to famous characters and locations that fans are well-acquainted with over the game’s 20+ year lifespan. Here’s what we know about both games so far:
RuneScape Board Game
- Board game for 1-5 players
- Quest-based campaigns throughout familiar locations in Gielinor
- Players will be able to craft and upgrade equipment
- Characters will increase skills as the game progresses
- Engage with NPCs during the course of your journey
- Features side quests to “distract and entertain” you as you play
- It’s Steamforged, so you know there are going to be high-quality miniatures to enhance your experience
RuneScape TTRPG
- Hardcover Core Rulebook to run players through the RuneScape world
- Lavishly Illustrated
- Build your character, explore Gielinor, and create unique quests
- Fully compatible with 5E
This is the first time that Jagex has ventured off to make a physical product instead of remaining solely digital. RuneScape has been widely popular since its release, and the Old School RuneScape brought back old fans who may have preferred how the game used to be back in their day.
RuneScape is still one of the most popular games in a market saturated with other MMOs like World of Warcraft or even Final Fantasy XIV. One of the appeals of the game is that you can actually download it for mobile and play RuneScape on the go! This includes the standard RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. You can’t do that with WoW, right? Well, technically with Steam Link I think that it’s possible, but we’re talking about a dedicated app here!
