Marvel Strike Force: New Augmented (Teal) Gear!

Welcome back to MSF Mondays! Each week we break down one more aspect of the hottest mobile game, Marvel Strike Force!

If there’s one thing that everybody enjoys about Marvel Strike Force, it’s the Gear. Remembering what gear goes with what tags, and who gets what, is practically a game in and of itself, especially since there’s no dedicated spot to view your inventory.

With the latest update, players are now able to gear up to Gear Tier 16 with the introduction of Augmented Teal Gear!

MSF: What’s the Deal with Teal Gear?

As I mentioned, Teal Gear is the next step up in gearing up your favorite Marvel Strike Force toons to get them more powerful. This brings the progression of gear as follows: Green, Blue, Purple, Orange, Teal. This is a step away from the norm; previous Tiers of Gear would have suggested that Gear Tier 16 would still be Orange.

Overall, Teal Gear is touted as being more streamlined than Orange Gear. The blog post introducing Teal Gear talks about how Orange Gear required 1,050 Superior Basic Catalysts. In comparison, you’ll only need 400 Augmented Basic Catalyst Parts total, to gear a toon from Tier 15 to Tier 16. That’s very significant.

Of course, you’ll still need to collect all of other non-Basic Catalysts and other Unique Teal Gear to make the next progression. Out of the 6 Gear slots, 4 pieces of Gear will be Teal and 2 pieces will be Orange.

You’ll also see that visually the Tier rings around a character are much cleaner and distinguishable from one another with the latest update. It’s much easier to tell characters apart without squinting and counting the rings like a Groot cross-section.

Each piece that requires Basic Catalysts will require 200 pieces.

MSF: How to Earn Teal Gear

Now let’s move onto the question on everyone’s mind: How do I earn Teal Gear in Marvel Strike Force?

Teal Gear, much like Orange Gear, is in high-demand and short supply. The primary method for acquiring this coveted Gear is to earn it through Doom II Raid. This essentially locks the Gear behind Alliance-specific objectives. This means that if you’re not in a high-tier, active alliance, you’re going to have a much harder time getting those toons up to Gear Tier 16.

Luckily, that’s not the only place to get Teal Gear. You’ve probably already noticed the updated rows of Teal gear in the Supplies Store and War Store, which will rotate various pieces of Teal Gear just like all the other gear. Both stores will only have 3 pieces for sale, and both stores will always have a dedicated spot reserved for Augmented Basic Catalysts. This means that you really have 4 spots cycling through the remaining Teal Gear (Catalysts, origin gear, uniques, and Gear Tier 16 mini-uniques) with each store refresh.

As a sidenote, I think the naming of ‘uniques’ and ‘mini-uniques’ is completely nonsensical.

Regardless of my opinions on nomenclature, you must be Commander Level 80 or higher to see the Teal gear in either Store.

You can also find Teal Gear in certain milestones or events going forwards. In fact, the Experiment X Milestones going on right now will reward you with certain pieces of Teal Gear in addition to Costume bits for Wolverine’s new Weapon X Costume.

You can sometimes earn Teal Gear through Milestones, like this Experiment X Event.

MSF: Prioritizing Gear Tier 16

Now that you know what Teal Gear is all about and how to obtain it, let’s talk about your prioritization of Teal Gear and which toons you should focus on getting to Gear Tier 16.

Honestly, I’m still working on filling out the remainder of my squads for Dark Dimension 4, so I’m completely content in my current situation of being squeezed for Orange Gear. I have zero desire to start buying up Teal Gear from the shop right now. However, I know that future-me will need Teal Gear, so I can’t completely ignore it.

My advice right now is to accumulate your Teal Gear and wait to spend it. Whenever the next Dark Dimension is released, you know that Gear Tier 16 will be a requirement. We just don’t know the extent to what the other requirements might be. Since your Teal Gear is going to be rare and at a premium, you don’t want to just start upgrading characters to Gear Tier 16 only to find out that they’re not going to contribute in DD5.

Patience is a virtue, but it really should pay off in this case. Build up your stores of Teal Gear, and pick up the occasional piece for your favorite, most powerful toons that will likely be heavy-hitters in upcoming content. Chances are high that current top-tier meta characters will be prime candidates for an upgrade to Gear Tier 16:

  • Infinity Watch
  • Kestrel
  • Silver Surfer
  • Secret Avengers
  • X-Factor

All of these are good options if you want to keep an eye out for their gear. Other notables might include Mr. Sinister, Emma Frost, Deathpool, Jubilee, Doc Ock, Ghost, Hela, Baron Zemo, Cloak, and Dagger. All of these toons will have utility going forwards, but I would still hold off on pulling the trigger on any upgrades to Gear Tier 16 until we know a little more about the future.

If you find yourself in a situation where your Alliance can be active in Doom II Raids, then obviously you have more flexibility with your Gear and can likely do some upgrades. You’re a completely different class of player than the average Marvel Strike Forcer that you pull off the street.

Well I hope this helps you take your Squad from a D+ to a B- Commander!
