The Sandpoint Three discover Ameiko’s father wishes for her to accompany him to Magnimar, despite her lack of desire to do so. They were speaking Minkaian at The Rusty Dragon.
Sheriff Hemlock, Mayor Deverin, and an elven woman named Shalelu meet the heroes at the Sandpoint Garrison the following morning. Shalelu is described as a “goblin expert.” Shalelu tells Silas, Krask, and Niko an increase in goblin raids along the Lost Coast of Varisia. Although usually squabbling, all five major goblin tribes in the region were present in the Sandpoint raid. Shalelu describes six particularly dangerous goblins that are regarded as “heroes” by goblins.
- Big Gugmut, a muscular and tall goblin from the Mosswood.
- Koruvus of the Seven Tooth Tribe, who wields a magical longsword. The short-tempered goblin vanished several months ago. He allegedly resides in a secret cave in the cliffs.
- Vorka, a cannibal goblin of the Brinestump Marsh. He is a hero to all goblins outside the Licktoad Tribe.
- Rendwattle Gutwad, also of the Brinestump Marsh Licktoads, a fat goblin who never leaves his throne.
- Ripnugget of the Thistletop goblins, who controls the best lair in the region.
- Bruthazmus, a Bugbear ranger from the Nettlewood who hates elves.
Shalelu and Hemlock will be leaving town to investigate for a few days. Hemlock charges the heroes with keeping a public presence in Sandpoint. The next morning, the Sandpoint Three are awoken by Bethana Corwin, the halfling bartender of The Rusty Dragon. Ameiko is missing! An investigation of Ameiko’s room reveals a crumpled note from her brother, Tsuto. In the note, he claims Lonjiku is involved in the Sandpoint attacks. He asks Ameiko to meet him at the Glassworks at midnight. Bethana tells the heroes that Lonjiku’s wife cheated on him, as both are humans and Tsuto is a half-elf. Tsuto was ignored by his father, though Ameiko secretly visited him. The siblings had an argument that ended with Tsuto striking Ameiko, prompting Ameiko to leave Sandpoint and adventure for a year. Lonjiku eventually drove Tsuto out of Sandpoint. Silas, Krask, and Niko head to the Sandpoint Glassworks.
Doors locked and curtains drawn, the glassworks is silent. While Krask is picking the lock on the delivery door, Olmur Danvakus, the local grocer, notices them. He promises to keep quiet after persuading the heroes to purchase a large quantity of fish from him. Krask finishes unlocking the door, which opens into a loading room. An empty safe is visible. To the north, the heroes hear laughter and smashing glass. Led by Krask, the Sandpoint Three sneak through the northern door.
Furnaces line the eastern walls of the room. Dismembered bodies of glassworks employees litter the floor of this room, some encased partially or wholly in hard glass. Several goblins are in the process of mutilating the bodies and playing with hot, molten glass. Lonjiku’s body can be seen completely enveloped by a lumpy pile of glass. Nearby, an elven man, possibly Tsuto, is tied down with a thick rope and tortured by goblins.
Where is Ameiko? Was Lonjiku really working with the goblins? How will the heroes eat 45 pounds of fish?
